The Spring Temple Buddha is a colossal statue depicting Vairocana Buddha located in the Zhaocun Township of Lushan County, Henan, China. It is a remote part of China. Construction of this statue began after the Taliban destroyed Buddhas of Bamyan which was part of Afghanistan which was condemned by the Chinese government at the time. The Buddhas of Bamyan were two 6th century monumental statues of Gautama Buddha carved into the side of a cliff in the Bamyan valley in the Hazarajat region of central Afghanistan.
The statue is depicting the Vairocana Buddha. Its mainframe is 108 metres (354 feet) high standing on the base of lotus pedestal which is 20 metres (66 feet) high. Below the carved out Lord Buddha with a flower base, is two multi-storeyed seats called the splendid Diamond seat and the Sumeru seat which also add up to the Spring Temple Buddha’s gigantic height. The Diamond Seat is 25 metres (82 feet) high and the Sumeru Seat is 55 metres (180 feet) high which, if included, bring the total height to a staggering 208 metres (682 feet). Construction was started in 1997 and completed in 2008, so it takes almost 11 years to build and the project was estimated to cost around $55 million including the cost of the statue of $18 million. It was originally estimated to consist of 1,100 pieces of the copper cast, with a total weight of 1,000 tonnes. Beneath the statue is a Buddhist monastery.
This massive statue of Lord Buddha made with metals; 108 kg of gold, 3,300 tonnes of copper alloy and 15,000 tonnes of steel covering a total area of more than eleven thousand square feet. To reach the statue, there are two large sets of stairs to climb – each with 365 steps. Additionally, once inside the lower building there are more stairs. In total, you will be walking up over 1000 stairs.
The Diamond Seat is an interesting building itself. It is made up of five levels, each containing many small shrines holding small scaled-down golden Spring Temple Buddha. There are over 5,000 shrines containing 6,666 mini Buddha’s statues that lay beneath it. The diamond seat below the copper marvel holds the Buddhist sacred monastery for people who come in search of eternal peace.
The Spring Temple Buddha was designed and made by a very famous design expert-Master Shengbiao Lin. This place was opened for public in November 2008, and 108 monks were witnessing the opening ceremony, and they are from everywhere of China, including China’s Mainland, Hongkong, and Macao.
Although the spring Temple Buddha is not so popular place but once you visit there, you will find peace. Once you reach there, you will get more attractions also. Just before you approach the statue, you will get to go through the Foquan Temple which will provide you that air of serenity some old building provide which was built during the 618-907 AD at the time of Tang dynasty. Many monks used to live here and the temple was considered as a prominent spot of Chinese Buddhists.
A large and heavy Bell of Good Luck can be found in the Foquan Temple halls; weighing more than 116 metric tons. It was given the title heaviest functioning bell at the time it was constructed. Yaoshan Fuquan host spring baths can also be found in the complex. The complex has many hot spring baths, pools and even waterslides.
